• Ubuntu Upgrade breaks firefox

  I upgraded ubuntu, but the upgrade broke firefox, adobe flash plugin and corrupted the package database. I ran the suggested catalog repair, no change. I ran apt-get -f install, no change. I ran apt purge packageName, no change. How can I resolve this circular dependency? Here are some details: installArchives() failed: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of adobe-flashplugin: firefox (12.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) breaks adobe-flashplugin (<= 11.1.102.63-0precise1) and is installed.   WARNING Retrying Bulk Insert for file:sqlldr due to Communication Error:256 I am running my engine on Linux and am receiving an intermittent message "WARNING Retrying bulk insert for file: sqlldr due to communication Error: 256" The engine seems to have completed successfully, but it is not clear if this error caused some of the forecast to not complete. It is also not clear what caused the error. Generally if you see only the WARNING of it, it means that next retries of the same load request have eventually succeeded and so the run a a whole is not affected. In order to know more about what happens, look for .log/.bad files left in the engines bin directory or possibly a quote of them within the specific engine log that had the issue.  The sqlnet.log file may also have some information about it and perhaps at the database server side there may be some log/alert regarding what happened.  Look at the alert.log. In general it could be that the database server/network was over loaded at the time and somehow the connection was rejected/failed/aborted either due to specific setting on concurrent connections/sessions or inadvertently due to glitch in network/os/hardware. If this repeats and becomes more frequent during the run you should look further into it as mentioned above. You can also track this using either SQL*Trace or java.util.logging.  - Globally enable logging by setting the oracle.jdbc.Trace system property java -Doracle.jdbc.Trace=true - Client Side Tracing: Your SQLNET.ORA file should contain the following lines to produce a client side trace file: trace_level_client = 10 trace_unique_client = on trace_file_client = sqlnet.trc trace_directory_client = <path_to_trace_dir> Server Side Tracing: To enable server side tracing, use the following parameters: trace_level_server = 10 trace_file_server = server.trc trace_directory_server = <path_to_trace_dir> Tracing Levels: The following values can be used for TRACE_LEVEL* parameters:     16 or SUPPORT — WorldWide Customer Support trace information     10 or ADMIN — Administration trace information     4 or USER — User trace information     0 or OFF — no tracing, the default Additional information is readily available via the web.

• Cannot log in to the desktop on ubuntu 11.10?

  The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too. I searched the internet, somebody said I should see the logs under /var/log/gdm, but there is not a /var/log/gdm directory in my box.   SQL Server does not support arrays or a dynamic length storage mechanism like list. Absolutely there are some clever workarounds and few extra-ordinary solutions but everybody can;t come up with such solution. Additionally, sometime the requirements are very simple that doing extraordinary coding is not required. Here is the simple case. Let us say here are the values: a, 10, 20, c, 30, d. Now the requirement is to store them in a array or list. It is very easy to do the same in C# or C. However, there is no quick way to do the same in SQL Server. Every single time when I get such requirement, I create a table variable and store the values in the table variables. Here is the example: For SQL Server 2012: DECLARE @ListofIDs TABLE(IDs VARCHAR(100)); INSERT INTO @ListofIDs VALUES('a'),('10'),('20'),('c'),('30'),('d'); SELECT IDs FROM @ListofIDs; GO When executed above script it will give following resultset. Above script will work in SQL Server 2012 only for SQL Server 2008 and earlier version run following code. DECLARE @ListofIDs TABLE(IDs VARCHAR(100), ID INT IDENTITY(1,1)); INSERT INTO @ListofIDs SELECT 'a' UNION ALL SELECT '10' UNION ALL SELECT '20' UNION ALL SELECT 'c' UNION ALL SELECT '30' UNION ALL SELECT 'd'; SELECT IDs FROM @ListofIDs; GO Now in this case, I have to convert numbers to varchars because I have to store mix datatypes in a single column. • Integration error in high velocity

  I've implemented a simple simulation of two planets (simple 2D disks really) in which the only force is gravity and there is also collision detection/response (collisions are completely elastic). I can launch one planet into orbit of the other just fine. The collision detection code though does not work so well. I noticed that when one planet hits the other in a free fall it speeds backward and goes much higher than its original position. Some poking around convinced me that the simplistic Euler integration is causing the error. Consider this case. One object has a mass of 1kg and the other has a mass equal to earth. Say the object is 10 meters above ground. Assume that our dt (delta t) is 1 second. The object goes to the height of 9 meters at the end of the first iteration, 7 at the end of the second, 4 at the end of the third and 0 at the end of the fourth iteration. At this points it hits the ground and bounces back with the speed of 10 meters per second. The problem is with dt=1, on the first iteration it bounces back to a height of 10. It takes several more steps to make the object change its course. So my question is, what integration method can I use which fixes this problem. Should I split dt to smaller pieces when velocity is high? Or should I use another method altogether? What method do you suggest? Luckily, Mix has exposed the ‘10 sessions via OData at http://api.visitmix.com/OData.svc, now all I have to do is slap together a bit of code to fetch the videos. Step 1 (cut a hole in the box) Create a new console application and add a new service reference. • Problem Installing Xubuntu 12.04 Audio-Video codecs

  I used Crouton to install Xubuntu 12.04.4 LTS with the XFCE environment on my HP Chromebook 11. I've gotten it all fully installed and everything; the only thing I'm doing now is the basic setup things, like adding codecs and other things like LibreOffice, VLC, Firefox, Ubuntu Software Center, etc. This information I got from 2 sources: http://www.efytimes.com/e1/fullnews.asp?edid=137269 http://www.binarytides.com/better-xubuntu-14-04/ . I'm currently on the same step at both URLs, which is #6 on Link 1 and #8 on Link 2. Per the articles, which both said the same thing, I typed in sudo apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras libavcodec-extra and it didn't do anything. It just kept on saying the same thing: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package libavcodec-extra I've spend the last hour or so scouring the internet for a solution, for a hint even at what is going on. I don't want to do a clean reinstall, for two reasons: 1) it's takes like 1.5h just to get the croot fully installed, and 2) everything but this out of what I've done so far (up to #6 at Link 1 & up to #8 at Link 2) works except the audio. I've already installed flash, so YouTube works fine. It's just I can't hear any audio. Please help? Thanks in advance. I appreciate all the great help I've been getting from AskUbuntu lately. You all are great.

• Troubleshooting wireless network connectivity

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10, and I'm running into trouble keeping my wireless connection alive. After rebooting, I get about 5-10 minutes of a good speed connection; afterwards, the connection just zeroes out. I've gotten around to stirring up a shell script that gives me another 10 minutes or so of connectivity. Script contents below: #! /bin/bash sudo ifconfig wlan0 up echo "Enabling wireless device . . ." sleep 5 sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid MyNetworkName echo "Connecting to network. . ." sleep 10 sudo dhclient wlan0 echo "Getting IP address. . ." sleep 5 echo "Done. Closing window. . ." sleep 5 Shortly after running the line "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid MyNetworkName" from the script, I notice the speed pick up. Other computers in my home running Windows XP are not affected by this problem, so all indications point to my Ubuntu machine. Does anyone have any pointers as to how to resolve this?

• Missing X-Spam-Status header

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS (trusty) and have followed the directions in https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/serverguide/mail-filtering.html and am sending and receiving mail just fine. While I do see X-Virus-Scanned headers in my messages, which suggests mail is indeed being processed, I do not see any X-Spam-Level or X-Spam-Score headers being added to messages. This makes downstream procmailrc and client-side filtering ...more difficult. While having $final_spam_destiny = D_DISCARD in /etc/amavis/conf.d/20-debian_defaults does greatly reduce spam to my inbox, I had concerns of false-positives prior to tuning and didn't know were there going, so have set it to D_PASS for the time being. This exposed the problem. I'm not sure where to look to start diagnosing the problem (otherwise I'd post a suspect configuration file). /etc/amavis/conf.d/15-content_filter_mode has the lines uncommented to enable virus and spam checks, and virus checking appears to be working according to the headers. Spam Assassin certainly seems to be starting just fine, too. • Who spotted the omission?

  In my entry OFM 11g: Install OAM 10.1.4.3 (32-bit) on 64-bit RedHat AS 5 I explained how to install OAM 10.1.4.3 (32-bit) on 64-bit RedHat. This is great and works. If you seriously want to use OAM 10.1.4.3 you should consider OHS 11g 32-bit. But this installation is a bit tricky. Nearly all tricks to get this done are described in the above mentioned entry. Today I realized that I missed a small bit to get the installation successfully done.The missing part is within the script to create a vital piece of the OHS 11g package. This part is called genclientsh and resides in $OHS_HOME/bin. This script uses gcc to link binaries. By default this script works great, but on a 64-bit Linux it fails. To get around this, find the variable LD and change the value of gcc to gcc -m32.Done. Caveat On support.oracle.com you will find a Note that suggests to build a small shell script named gcc and includes the -m32 switch. Actually, I consider this as dangerous, because we are humans and tend to forget things quickly. Building a globally available script that changes things for a single setup has side effects that will result in unpredictable results.

• SOA Starting Point: Methods for Service Identification and Definition

  As more and more companies start to incorporate a Service Oriented Architectural design approach into their existing enterprise systems, it creates the need for a standardized integration technology. One common technology used by companies is an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). An ESB, as defined by Progress Software, connects and mediates all communications and interactions between services. In essence an ESB is a form of middleware that allows services to communicate with one another regardless of framework, environment, or location. With the emergence of ESB, a new emphasis is now being placed on approaches that can be used to determine what Web services should be built. In addition, what order should these services be built? In May 2011, SOA Magazine published an article that identified 10 common methods for identifying and defining services. SOA’s Ten Common Methods for Service Identification and Definition: Business Process Decomposition Business Functions Business Entity Objects Ownership and Responsibility Goal-Driven Component-Based Existing Supply (Bottom-Up) Front-Office Application Usage Analysis Infrastructure Non-Functional Requirements  Each of these methods provides various pros and cons in regards to their use within the design process. • ThinkPad TrackPoint Buttons Not Working Well

  The TrackPoint itself works fine. But the three buttons below the spacebar don't. For example if I were to copy these lines, 1-10, using trackpoint buttons it'd start highlighting at 7. If I use the main TrackPad (the part every laptop) and it's buttons it works normal, 1-10: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 It's like the button doesn't register right away. I use the TrackPoint ALL the time. I love it and I don't think I can go back to the normal TrackPad, so is there anyway to fix this? An app or setting? Also, the middle button to scroll isn't working at all I tried: Middle Button on ThinkPad Not Working with 10.10 update And put it in /usr/share/... and /usr/lib... neither seem to work. They USED to work. I used to be able to use that method of fixing it, but it seems in 11.04 this doesnt work? I dont wanna give up on Ubuntu yet...

• Calculating a child Position, Rotation and Scale values?

  I am making my own game editor(just for fun) anyway I have problem that I had several days trying to resolve but I have been unsuccessful. Here goes... I have an object "A": Position: (3,3,3), Rotation: (45,10,0), Scale(1,2,2.5) And an object "B": Position: (1,1,1), Rotation: (10,34,18), Scale(1.5,2,1) I now make a parent/child relationship. "B" is a child of "A": A |--B When I do the relationship I need to re-calculate the Child("B") Position, Rotation and Scale such that it maintains its current position, rotation and scale(Location in world). So for child position "B" it would now be (-2, -2, -2) since now "A" it is center and (-2, -2, -2) will keep the object in its same position. I think I got the Position and scale figure out, but rotation I cant. So I was trying to figure out what to do and what I did is opened Unity and run the same example and I did noticed that when making an abject a child object the child object did not moved at all but had its Position, Rotation and Scale values changed(Related to the parent). For example: Unity (Parent Object "A"): Position: (0,0,0) Rotation: (45,10,0) Scale: (1,1,1) Unity (Child Object "B"): Position: (0,0,0) Rotation: (0,0,0) Scale: (1,1,1) When making it a parent child relation("B" is a child of "A") the child object("B") in its Rotation values now has: X: -44.13605 Y: -14.00195 Z: 9.851074 If I plug the same values to my editor(To the child "B" rotation X, Y, Z values) the object does not move at all. So I basically need to know how did Unity arrive at those rotation values for the child(What are the calculations?). If you can help and put all the equations for the Position, Rotation or Scale then I can double check I am doing it correctly but with the Rotation I really need help. Thanks!

• How to loop section from a song correctly?

  I'm programming a little Music Engine for my game in C# and XNA, and one aspect from it is the possibility to loop a section from a song. For example, my song has an intropart, and when the song reached the end ( or any other specific point ), it jumps back where the intropart is just over. ( A - B - B - B ... ) Now I'm using IrrKlank, which is working perfectly, without any gaps, but I have a problem: The point where to jump back is a bit inaccurate. Here's some example code: public bool Passed(float time) { if ( PlayPosition >= time ) return true; return false; } //somewhere else if( song.Passed( 10.0f ) ) song.JumpTo( 5.0f ); Now the problem is, the song passes the 10 seconds, but play a few milliseconds until 10.1f or so, and then jumps to 5 seconds. It's not that dramatic, but very incorrect for my needs. I tried to fix it like that: public bool Passed( float time ) { if( PlayPosition + 3 * dt >= time && PlayPosition <= time ) return true; return false; } ( dt is the delta time, the elapsed time since the last frame ) But I don't think, that's a good solution for that. I hope, you can understand my problem ( and my english, yay /o/ ) and help me :)

• Launching php script through comman line - keeping terminal window open after execution

  Oh, my girlfriend really likes it when I launch php scripts! There's something special about them, she says ... Thus, I coded this script to run throught the CLI (Command Line Interface) - so it's running locally, not on a web server. It launches just fine through right click open run in terminal but closes right after execution. **Is there a way to keep the terminal window open? Of course I can launch it through a terminal window - which would stay open - but I'm looking for a one click action. With bash scripts I use $SHELL but that didn't work (see code below). So far, the only thing I came up with is sleep(10); which gives me 10 seconds for my girl to check the output.
